Mars Rover Descending into Victoria Crater
July 3, 2007 | NASA

The aging but highly successful Mars Rover Opportunity is preparing to descend into Victoria Crater. NASA scientists hope to get valuable information about the geologic history of Mars. Exposed in the layered rocks of the crater walls may be portions of the Mars rock record. Opportunity is long beyond its expected life-span and scientists worry that it could break down or lack the power to climb back out. However, the deeper into the crater the rover descends the older the rocks it will be able to “see” - so the information potential was thought to be worth the risk.
