US Grad Students Detained in Brazil
July 10, 2009 | Arizona Geology

Three American graduate students, two from the University of Arizona and one from the University of Minnesota, were arrested in Brazil for collecting sediment samples. While their work was related to climate change, Brazil has charged them with a violation of laws meant to regulate mineral exploration. They were jailed for over a week but now can not leave the country until charges against them are processed. Detailed information about this is at the Arizona Geology blog. If you would like to support them by having your name added to a letter going to authorities in Brazil you can contact Andrew Cohen (details and contact information here).
