New Atomic Weights for 19 Elements
October 31, 2013 | USGS
The standard atomic weights of nineteen elements have been changed as the result of cooperative research supported by the U.S. Geological Survey and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. The standard atomic weights of molybdenum, cadmium, selenium, and thorium have been changed based on recent determinations of terrestrial isotopic abundances. In addition, the standard atomic weights of 15 elements have been revised based on a new assessment of their atomic masses by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics.

Fluorescent Fish?
January 12, 2014 | PLOS ONE
"Fish biofluorescence is especially common and morphologically variable in cryptically patterned coral-reef lineages. We identified 16 orders, 50 families, 105 genera, and more than 180 species of biofluorescent fishes." Quoted from the PLOS ONE abstract. Related: Fluorescent Minerals

Fluorescent Minerals
February 4, 2014 | Geology.com
A few minerals have an interesting physical property known as "fluorescence". These minerals have the ability to temporarily absorb a small amount of light and an instant later release a small amount of light of a different wavelength.
