Wisconsin’s Mifflin Meteorite

“The Mifflin Meteorite created a fireball equivalent to 20 tons of TNT, initiating a scientific quest that revealed the complex history of a rocky body that predates Earth’s formation. Although the fireball could be seen from Madison, 50 miles away, the meteorite was far smaller than the object that exploded over Siberia.”

Missing-Mantle Mystery

But to date, scientists have found that, quite literally, something doesn’t add up: Namely, the Earth’s mantle — the layer between the planet’s crust and core — is missing an amount of lead found in meteorites whose composition has been analyzed following impact with the Earth." Olympic Gold Plus Meteoritic Iron

Some of the gold medals awarded at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics will contain pieces of the meteorite that fell over Russia on February 15, 2013. Only gold medals awarded on the one-year anniversary of the fall will contain a piece of the meteorite. Related: What are Meteorites?
